Connection Check

Before forwarding any ports, please check if the Sleep is Death application can automatically configure your router:

1. Open Sleep is Death
2. Select "Start a Remote Internet game as controller"
3. Wait until the "Trying to open a port on your router..." message disappears.
4. Even if you receive the message "Failed to open a router port" go to http://sidtube.com/conncheck
5. Click "click here"
6. If you receive a "Success" message then you are all set to host remote games. If not, you have to forward ports on your router manually...see below.

Forwarding Ports Manually: Step By Step

Please note: The following steps will only work if you have administrative access to your router. If you are on a business or campus network or behind a router that you do not have administrative access to you may be able to use software such as Hamachi to connect with a remote user also running the software.

1. To host Sleep is Death you must first forward port 7778 through your router (both TCP and UDP protocols). Detailed instructions on forwarding ports can be found at portforward.com. Simply select your router model (usually found on the bottom of the router) and then choose the "default guide."
2. After forwarding the ports through your router you can retry the above instructions to test the connection at sidtube.com/conncheck.
3. If you receive a success message then you are all set to start hosting a game, proceed to step 4. If you do not receive a success message see the troubleshooting tips below.
4. Provide another player with your external ip address (listed at sidtube.com/conncheck) or go to sidtube.com/games

If you wish you can customize the connection port in the port.ini file in your settings folder however matchmaking at http://sidtube.com/games currently only works with port 7778.

Troubleshooting Port Forwarding Issues

1. You may have forwarded the ports on your router but your computer may have a firewall running. Please try disabling any running firewalls and attempting a connection check (detailed above).
2. You may have a modem with a built-in router in additional to your stand alone router. If possible try connecting your computer directly to your modem and then attempt a connection check.

  • 2a. If the connection check passes then you have narrowed down the issue to be a problem with port forwarding on your router.
  • 2b. If the connection check fails then you may have a router built into your modem. If so you will need to forward ports through your modem to your router (note: the ip address of the router on the modem's network will be different than the router's ip address on a computer hooked up to the router. This is all a bit complicated...feel free to ask for help on the sidtube IRC channel). Instructions for port forwarding modems can be found at portforward.com.

Having Problems with UPnP?

Under Windows the game may need the "SSDP Discovery Service" running for UPNP to be happy. Some people report that setting this service to automatically run at startup, and restarting it, make it works (instructions to come shortly). Here's the IRC log:

[00:29] <atiaxi> AH-HA!
[00:29] <Moss|ITcrowd> it works now?
[00:29] <atiaxi> Yes
[00:29] <Moss|ITcrowd> It was a firewall?
[00:29] <atiaxi> No!
[00:29] <Moss|ITcrowd> TELL ME THE TRUTH!
[00:29] <bobolino> yea, but the time needed to set something up properly ... you hardly have time to maintain and improvise
[00:30] <Moss|ITcrowd> I CAN DEAL WITH THE TRUTH
[00:30] <bobolino> anyways, FUN !!
[00:30] <atiaxi> The "SSDP Discovery Service" needs to not only be running, but set to start up automatically
[00:30] <Moss|ITcrowd> interesting
[00:30] * jasonrohrer has quit IRC (Ping timeout: 67 seconds)
[00:30] <bobolino> im gona make me some sprites soon
[00:30] <Moss|ITcrowd> you probably disabled it to optimize ram or something?
[00:30] <lentilstew> I've made a good deal of sprites.
[00:30] <atiaxi> That's the strange thing.
[00:30] <atiaxi> It was /already running/
[00:30] <atiaxi> Just not set up to run on startup.
[00:31] <bobolino> and so if you feel like hosting, you just setup a game on sidtube
[00:31] <Moss|ITcrowd> I am going to add that to the wiki
